Easy Rider vs Self-Ride on the Ha Giang Loop: Which Should You Choose?

Planning a motorbike adventure on the Ha Giang Loop? One of the most common questions travellers ask is whether to choose an Easy Rider (a local driver) or Self-Ride (riding your own motorbike).

Which option is right for you? Here are some practical insights to help you make the best decision.

1. 🏍️ Should You Choose Easy Rider or Self-Ride?

✅ Choose Easy Rider if:

  • .You have limited motorbike riding experience or are not confident in your riding skills.
  • .You do not have a valid motorcycle driving licence for Vietnam.
  • .You prioritise safety and want to relax, enjoy the scenery and make the most of your journey.

✅ Choose Self-Ride if:

  • .You have plenty of motorbike riding experience and feel confident in your abilities.
  • .You hold a valid motorcycle driving licence recognised in Vietnam.
  • .You love riding, enjoy adventure and want to experience the Ha Giang Loop from behind the handlebars.

However, even if you have been riding motorbikes for many years back home, there are a few things about Ha Giang’s roads you should know before deciding to ride yourself.

2. 🏔️ What You Should Know About Ha Giang’s Mountain Roads

🛣️ Narrow Mountain Roads and Two-Way Traffic

.Many mountain roads in Ha Giang are only around 5 metres wide, while some wider sections reach approximately 7 metres. Often, there is a mountainside on one side and a steep drop on the other. The roads feature sharp bends, limited visibility and no physical barrier separating oncoming traffic.

.You may suddenly encounter a car or a large truck coming towards you just around a bend.

.For first-time visitors, these situations can be challenging. Local Easy Rider drivers, however, travel these roads every day. They know the road conditions, where to slow down and how to handle oncoming vehicles.

🚛 Large Trucks on Narrow Mountain Passes

.In Ha Giang, you may encounter heavy trucks carrying construction materials or even container trucks moving slowly along mountain passes. These vehicles sometimes occupy much of the road, making overtaking difficult.

.Riders unfamiliar with the terrain may spend considerable time travelling behind a slow-moving truck. Attempting to overtake without sufficient visibility or misjudging the available space can be dangerous.

.Experienced local drivers know how to assess the road, identify suitable places and wait for safe opportunities to overtake rather than rushing into a decision on unfamiliar mountain roads.

🏍️ Riding Experience at Home Is Not Always Enough

.You may have been riding motorbikes for decades, but Ha Giang’s roads can be very different from those in your home country.

.Continuous sharp bends, steep gradients, slippery surfaces and unexpected traffic situations require careful observation and appropriate riding techniques.

.The motorbike you rent in Ha Giang may also feel different from the one you ride at home. You need time to become familiar with its brakes, throttle, weight and handling.

.By contrast, local Easy Rider drivers know both the roads and the motorbikes they use every day. They understand how their bikes respond, from braking and acceleration to balance and handling on different road surfaces.

.Knowing both the road and the motorbike is a major advantage when travelling through Ha Giang’s mountain passes.

📸 Beautiful Scenery Can Also Be a Distraction

.Ha Giang is famous for its breathtaking mountain landscapes. When riding yourself, you need to concentrate on the road, but it is easy to become distracted by the spectacular views around you.

.For drivers born and raised in Ha Giang, these landscapes and winding roads are part of everyday life. They are not travelling to admire the scenery — riding is their job, allowing them to give their full attention to the road.

.As an Easy Rider passenger, you can sit back, admire the mountains, observe local life, take photos and capture videos throughout your journey.

.In our experience in Ha Giang, approximately 90% of the tourist accidents we are aware of involve travellers riding their own motorbikes. The reasons are not simply a lack of riding skills, but also unfamiliar roads, unfamiliar motorbikes and distractions along the journey.

3. 📋 Don’t Forget to Check Your Motorcycle Licence

.If you choose Self-Ride, you need a driving licence that is valid in Vietnam and covers the type of motorbike you intend to ride.

.Having riding experience or holding a motorcycle licence in your home country does not automatically mean you are legally permitted to ride every type of motorbike in Vietnam.

For more details, read our guide: Self-Riding in Ha Giang and International Driving Licences.

.At Dragon Team, both Easy Rider and Self-Ride options on our Classic Ha Giang Loop tours are organised in small groups of no more than 10 guests. Self-Ride guests operate their own motorbikes while travelling with the guidance and support of our team throughout the journey.

4. ❤️ If You Asked Me Personally, What Would I Recommend?

My name is Long, and I am the founder of Dragon Team. If you asked for my personal advice, I would recommend Easy Rider for two reasons.

🛡️ First, safety.

I want you to experience the beauty of Ha Giang in the most relaxed and reassuring way possible. An experienced local driver who knows the mountain roads and their unique traffic conditions can help reduce the risks of riding through unfamiliar terrain.

🤝 Second, supporting local employment.

.One of the reasons I founded Dragon Team was to create more jobs, better incomes and safer working conditions for local drivers.

.When you choose Easy Rider, you are not simply travelling with a local companion. You are also directly providing work and income for someone from the local community.

This is also part of the story behind why I founded Dragon Team.

.Of course, if you love riding and have the necessary skills and a suitable licence, I would still be very happy for you to choose Self-Ride.

.Above all, I want you to enjoy a memorable Ha Giang journey that suits you and leaves you with wonderful memories to take home.
